What Is X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) Assaying?

X-Ray Fluorescence testing is a modern analytical technique used to determine the type of metals present and their percentage of the total composition. The process uses low-level X-rays to excite atoms within the metal, producing a unique energy signature for each element.

This allows us to identify metal content without drilling, cutting, or altering your item in any way. Using state-of-the-art XRF equipment, Crossroads Coins, Inc. can identify up to 26 different elements, including both precious and base metals.

Commonly identified metals include:

  • Gold
  • Silver
  • Platinum
  • Palladium
  • Copper
  • Zinc
  • Nickel
  • Iron
  • Lead
  • Cadmium
  • Manganese
  • ...and many more

Whether you’re evaluating jewelry, bullion, industrial components, or unidentified metal items, we can help you understand exactly what you’re working with.

Important Limitations to Know

To ensure transparency, we want our customers to understand what XRF testing can — and cannot — do. XRF testing cannot assay raw rocks or ore unless there are visible, substantial metal sections present. Surface readings may not accurately reflect internal composition when metals are not exposed. For lead or cadmium testing, our XRF equipment uses the same technology employed by many state agencies for consumer safety testing. However, Crossroads Coins, Inc. is not a licensed lead or cadmium testing authority and cannot provide official certification or documentation for regulatory purposes.
